The Fortress Brod (Festung Brod in German language), located in Slavonski Brod, Croatia,
is a remarkable monument of the Baroque architecture of the 18th century.
In the European history of Baroque fortifications it played significant role
as part of the system of fortified towns on the frontier towards Turkish Empire.
Prince Eugene of Savoy designed it at the beginning of the 18th century.
Although uniform in architecture the Fortress was built in three different
construction stages during 18th century. Building of the fortress was finished at
the time of queen Maria Theresia in seventies of the 18th century, when greater part
of edifices within the fortress were finished, including a unique structure of
Cavalier the greatest building of this type in fortification architecture in general.

Ivana Brlic Mazuranic was born on April 18, 1874 in Ogulin, Croatia.
Her grandfather was the famous Croatian ban and poet Ivan Mažuranic,
while her grandmother Aleksandra Mažuranic was the sister of well
known linguist Dimitrije Demetar.
Upon marriage to Vatroslav Brlic, a politician and a prominent lawyer
in 1892, she moved to Brod na Savi (today Slavonski Brod, Croatia) where she
lived there for most of her life.
Her books of novels and fairy tales for children, originally intended
to educate her own, have been translated into nearly all European languages.
Highly regarded and valued by both national and foreign literary critics,
she obtained the title of Croatian Andersen.

In the French army in 17th century, during the reign of Louis XIII, there was a
cavalry composed of the Croats, called Royal - Cravate. These soldiers gave the
world something that is today unavoidable in fashion: the tie, called la cravate
by the French and die Krawatte by the Germans.
At historical map of the Habsburg Monarchy, prepared by Nikola Sparr de Bensdorf,
dated in 1697, a part of Slavonski Brod, today the centre of the city - The Square of
Ivana Brlic-Mazuranic was marked as Cravatten Statt.
